More than 40 companies have laid off employees so far in 2026, continuing significant workforce reductions across tech, media, finance, and retail. Some, including Block, Coinbase, and Standard Chartered, cited artificial intelligence as a key reason. Target is shifting resources from its supply chain into stores as part of its new CEO's turnaround strategy. More than 100 other companies have filed WARN notices about job cuts to come in 2026, according to WARN Tracker. A World Economic Forum survey last year found that some 41% of companies worldwide expected to reduce their workforces in the next five years because of AI, and jobs in big data, fintech, and AI are expected to double by 2030. Amazon said in January it would eliminate around 16,000 corporate roles globally, following mass layoffs from October 2025 when it shed 14,000 roles. In May, Amazon's Selling Partner Services team slashed additional jobs. Angi said in January it was cutting around 350 jobs "to reduce operating expenses and optimize the organizational structure in support of long-term growth," citing "AI-driven efficiency improvements." In a January 7 SEC filing, Angi said the cuts would save between $70 million and $80 million in annual spending and cost between $22 million and $30 million. Atlassian is cutting 1,600 employees.
