A study by researchers at the University of Washington and Colorado Boulder, which set out to map how people use ChatGPT for fiction, found that one anonymous user generated the same *Doki Doki Literature Club* childbirth fanfiction scene thousands of times. The researchers combed through half a million public conversations from WildChat, a dataset of over 500,000 English-language ChatGPT conversations from 2023 and 2024, and found roughly a third involved fiction, with the top two percent producing more than 80% of the fiction conversations. In the repeatedly generated story, schoolgirl Natsuki suddenly goes into labor in the literature clubroom; every prompt cut off mid-scream, and the AI finished the moment. In one version, a paramedic delivers the line, “Congratulations, Natsuki. It’s a beautiful baby girl.” The researchers coined the term *infinite story demanders* for such repeaters, and *Doki Doki Literature Club* topped the study’s list of most-mentioned franchises, ahead of *League of Legends* and *Naruto*. About half of WildChat’s fiction prompts were fanfiction, and over a quarter were sexually explicit, though this particular thread stayed surprisingly wholesome. The researchers argue the pattern raises questions about whether AI fiction could replace human readers and writers.
