Chrome Canary is testing a Gemini-powered “Change it for me” option for weak and reused passwords, controlled by a hidden “Password change with Glic” flag that is not yet working reliably. The feature, spotted by browser tipster Leopeva64 on X, is currently available only in the latest Chrome Canary build on desktop, not on Android. In testing on Windows 11, enabling the flag replaces the standard “Change password” button with a “Change it for me” option featuring Gemini’s sparkle icon, aiming to let AI handle the process end-to-end instead of navigating to a site’s settings page. This builds on a Gemini password feature first spotted in Chrome’s code back in 2024. Chrome already has an automated password-change feature for compromised passwords on supported sites, but this experiment extends it to weak and reused credentials. The feature is in early development; clicking “Change it for me” resulted in the manager getting stuck displaying “Attempting to sign-in…” before throwing an error stating the password couldn’t be updated. Automating credential changes with AI raises concerns about trust for root-level security changes, given research showing AI password generation can be flawed, and automated scripts often struggle with custom two-factor authentication prompts or non-standard login forms.
