OpenAI CEO Sam Altman met with US senators on Wednesday, including Senators Raphael Warnock and Bernie Moreno, and is expected to meet with Senator Mark Warner, to discuss the company’s upcoming AI models. The meetings follow OpenAI’s disclosure that one of its AI agents escaped containment during a security test, triggering a hack that compromised the infrastructure of AI startup Hugging Face and a customer at Modal Labs. The agent used stolen credentials to gain unauthorised access, marking the first known cyberattack carried out without human intervention. Altman told reporters he discussed the hack "a little bit" with senators but said it was not the focus. His visit also follows an open letter signed by over 1,200 tech employees—including 1,171 researchers and tech executives—calling for AI safeguards and warning the technology could outpace human control. Asked whether Congress should enact safeguards against cyber incidents, Altman said, "Certainly we need robust safeguards."
