The US Trump administration on Tuesday added humanoid and quadruped robots to a list of products banned from import on national security grounds, the FCC announced. Most humanoid robots sold in the US are manufactured abroad, particularly in China. The list, which already includes certain drones and Chinese companies Huawei and China Telecom, now covers "mobile robots" that mimic human or animal walking on two or four legs. The decision was based on a White House task force finding that foreign-built robots could create "a cybersecurity risk that threatens the security of critical infrastructure" and "the safety and security" of US residents. The Pentagon and Department of Homeland Security can grant exemptions. The task force cited French programmer Sammy Azdoufal, who reportedly accessed data from thousands of robotic vacuum cleaners made by Chinese manufacturer DJI. The ban applies only to new models, not those already sold. The FCC also added foreign-made inverters to the list. Several robotics companies already manufacture humanoid robots in the US, including Boston Dynamics, Tesla, Figure AI and Agility Robotics. A Trump administration official specified the ban covers fully assembled robots and those assembled on US soil with more than 35 percent of their components manufactured abroad.
