A new master’s degree in artificial intelligence (AI) is being offered this fall at WSU through the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS). The program will provide students with high-demand skills in AI and machine learning to meet industry needs around the state and region, enabling them to acquire AI skills and industry standards. Students will learn to apply theories, models, and techniques for AI algorithm design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Jana Doppa, Huie-Rogers Endowed Chair Professor of Computer Science leading curriculum development, said the program will share foundational computer science courses while specializing in advanced AI and machine learning topics. The program is intended for students seeking employment opportunities or preparing for PhD-level research. Doppa noted AI tools play a critical role in application development across domains such as health, environmental informatics, physics, chemistry, additive manufacturing, bioinformatics, and cybersecurity. WSU’s School of EECS has faculty conducting research in areas including AI for science and engineering, trustworthy AI, generative AI, and reinforcement learning, and is ranked among top US computer science programs in design automation, high-performance computing, and artificial intelligence. The program requires either 30 or 33 credits, depending on thesis or final project, and includes core courses in AI, machine learning, and neural network design, advanced topics like computer vision and generative AI, and six credits of electives. Entering students have completed calculus, linear algebra, and statistics with a computing foundation.
