Japanese developer Takiya Iijima, creator of the visual novels Gakkou De Atta Kowai Hanashi and the Apathy series, confirmed that the debut teaser for the new Apathy installment, published on August 1, was created using generative artificial intelligence. Iijima stated that generative AI lets him embody his envisioned images and select the precise visual style he imagined. He intends to dedicate his career to independent development, releasing games through his own studio, 7Korobi8Korogari, for less than 1000 yen without major publishers. During a broadcast, Iijima addressed copyright issues, saying he ensured legal matters were settled before commercial application. He spends several hundred thousand yen monthly on AI tools reportedly trained on works owned by his studio. He emphasized that content creation is not limited to "pressing a single button," as the team carefully refines prompts to create character images from scratch. Iijima believes AI allows a small team of one or two people to create high-quality entertainment at an affordable price, but he does not plan to use similar technologies in home console projects due to stricter stakeholder attitudes. He writes the script for the new Apathy installment entirely himself, without generative AI assistance.
