Meta Employees Burned $221M in AI Tokens in One Month: Now Big Tech S…

According to new research from SemiAnalysis, based on conversations with more than 50 enterprise customers and discussions at the Databricks AI Summit, companies are moving away from unrestricted AI usage and towards carefully managed budgets. Earlier this year, Meta employees consumed more than 60 trillion AI tokens over a 30-day period, and one employee created an internal dashboard ranking the company's 250 biggest AI users, with some competing for titles such as 'Token Legend' and 'Cache Wizard'. The internal leaderboard was removed two days after The Information reported on it. SemiAnalysis found that most organisations it spoke to have now introduced AI budgets, with some companies capping employees at $250 or $500 per month, while technology firms such as Workday and Stripe allow budgets of around $2,000 per month. SemiAnalysis argues that reports about heavy AI spending at companies including Meta and Uber do not represent the wider enterprise market, noting that median enterprise AI spending is far lower than that of the highest-spending technology companies.
