Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are set to unveil next-generation memory technologies at the Hot Chips conference, held this week in California alongside FMS (Future of Memory and Storage). FMS is the world's largest independent conference dedicated to memory and storage technology, where chipmakers including Samsung, SK hynix and Micron present roadmaps covering HBM, DRAM, NAND, SSDs and CXL. Hot Chips, launched in 1989 and held every August in Silicon Valley, is the premier conference for high-performance semiconductor and computing architecture, with Nvidia, AMD, Intel, IBM and Arm presenting next-generation CPUs, GPUs, AI accelerators, and memory and packaging technologies. The event focuses on real products rather than academic papers. Hot Chips serves as a weathervane for industry trends: in 2024, Nvidia presented on its Blackwell accelerator and AMD on its MI300X; in 2025, the focus shifted to AI data centers with Nvidia, AMD and Google discussing rack architecture, GPUs, TPUs and networking. This year's theme is striking, as the very first tutorial is titled "Memory Technology," and a dedicated memory session has been formally added to the program, signaling a shift in focus as the AI bottleneck moves toward memory.
