The Financial Times reported on the 4th that Oracle canceled a $7 billion (about 9.41 trillion won) artificial intelligence (AI) chip rental deal with China's Tencent under pressure from the Donald Trump administration, a day after a report that Nvidia had asked its cloud customers to scale back their business in China. According to the FT, U.S. officials reached out to Oracle and raised concerns about the deal, which was signed this year, after which Oracle canceled it. The deal called for Oracle to provide Tencent with up to 100,000 advanced AI chips over five years from several data centers in Southeast Asia, making it Tencent's largest overseas rental agreement. Chinese companies have been using a workaround of renting Nvidia chips from data centers in third countries such as Southeast Asia to avoid U.S. export controls on China, and the cancellation is seen as a sign that the U.S. government has begun directly curbing such detours. FT reported the previous day that Nvidia had notified cloud customers to sell at least 51% of their services to non-Chinese companies.
