Google’s custom AI expert feature “Gem (Gems)” in the AI “Gemini” will be discontinued on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. A notice announcing the discontinuation has begun appearing on the “Gem” homepage for some users. Users are encouraged to save their “Custom Prompts” and regenerate them using “Skills,” the task execution tool for the personal AI agent “Gemini Spark.” The feature was originally announced at “Google I/O 2024” in May 2024, and began rolling out on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, for Gemini Advanced members. In March 2025, it was made available for free to free-tier users. The discontinuation came to light as some users saw a notification about the end of “Gem” on their home page. The notification is currently only appearing for some users and is not yet widely rolled out. Google is planning to retire Gems on Gemini by October 20, and users will be asked to recreate their Gems as Skills.
