Trump just found the worst way to regulate AI

The White House imposed export controls on Anthropic's latest AI model, "Mythos" in its unrestricted form and "Fable" in its heavily bounded, publicly accessible one, after learning it contained a potential security vulnerability. This made it unlawful for Anthropic to provide Fable to any foreign national, including its own immigrant employees, forcing Anthropic to take Fable offline completely. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei had argued that regulatory restrictions on AI are urgently needed, writing that the release of cutting-edge AI models "should be blocked or reversed as a threat to public safety" if they fail to meet strict security standards. However, the White House deemed Anthropic's safety guardrails—including Fable's refusal to answer queries about cybersecurity or biology—insufficient. The administration's action represents a regulatory regime governed by the executive branch's whims, apparent technical misunderstandings of lay officials, and a corrupt president's political biases, rather than clear rules or domain expertise.
