The one guest Melania didn’t want staying over at the White House

According to the book *Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump* by New York Times reporters Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan, published Tuesday, First Lady Melania Trump objected to hosting Elon Musk overnight at the White House but was overruled. President Donald Trump agreed to Musk’s request to stay, and the SpaceX and Tesla founder spent multiple nights in the Lincoln Bedroom. The book states, “Other nights he stayed with friends,” and that Musk told associates he had used a sleeping bag on the floor of his office in the Eisenhower Building. During his four-month stint as a special government employee, Musk oversaw layoffs and pushed budget cuts. In May 2025, Musk told reporters he “sometimes” stayed overnight at the White House only at the president’s invitation. The next month, Musk left DOGE, coinciding with a public falling out with Trump. The first lady is not the only person in the Trump world to take issue with Musk; a December 2025 Vanity Fair profile quoted White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles calling Musk “an odd, odd duck” and “an avowed ketamine” user, and Axios reported in April 2025 that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent clashed with Musk in a “heated shouting match” over the IRS.
