Meta AI's new tool, Muse Image, released on Tuesday and available on the Meta AI app, Instagram Stories in the US, and WhatsApp in select countries, allows users to tag a public Instagram profile and generate images using faces pulled directly from those accounts. Users with public profiles are included by default, receive no notification, and must actively seek out a buried setting to opt out. Private accounts and accounts belonging to users under 18 are automatically excluded. Meta directs users to the "sharing and reuse" section within Instagram privacy settings to toggle off the content reuse option. Privacy advocates are alarmed; Thorin Klosowski of the Electronic Frontier Foundation reportedly said this should be an opt-in setting, representing an entirely new use of photos posted publicly years ago. Meta has not clarified whether children appearing in photos posted by public adult accounts could be used in prompts. Meta is already planning to roll out Muse Image on Facebook and introduce similar video capabilities.
