"Ideas like this usually just die": Inside generative AI’s effect on …

Nexus Mods, a popular modding site, has seen a rise in generative AI use in mod creation, including AI-generated voices, art, and LLM-assisted coding, since AI voice tech like Elevenlabs appeared a few years ago. In 2023, Nexus Mods stated AI-generated content wasn’t against its rules but "may be removed if we receive a credible complaint from an affected creator/rights holder." The article highlights a Skyrim mod called Bard Hero, which turns instrument-playing into a Guitar Hero-style rhythm game. Its creator, Mern, disclosed using "LLMs to help for coding, debugging, documentation, and the occasional 4 am ‘huh?’ moment." Mern, who has a diploma in programming and worked at a game studio, said he had to think architecturally, built and tested the mod, reviewed and adapted the code, and maintains it, with open-source code available. He acknowledged strong feelings about AI use, citing "questionable AI practices and grandma’s pension ending up in the next AI IPO" and described society as "apparently speedrunning technofeudalism." The article notes that as AI use grows, it’s becoming tougher to recognize which mods rely on these tools, and the default for those preferring human-made mods is to ignore AI-dependent ones.
