Paradigm released a web game, the RSI Simulator, to demonstrate the economics of AI research and development, where players act as an AI lab investing labor, compute, and data into R&D to bootstrap an artificial superintelligence. Inspired by the paper "The Economics of Recursive Self-Improvement" from the Elasticity Institute, the game uses actual economic models but calibrates parameters for pedagogy, not predictive accuracy. An accompanying explorer tool visualizes the underlying models. The creators note that AI development has followed statistical laws, particularly scaling laws for model training. They highlight insights from the work: weak links dominate, meaning AI research is constrained by complementary inputs like human researchers, compute, and data, so recursive self-improvement may be compute- or data-constrained, especially if algorithmic progress depends on increasing scale.
