OpenAI Pierre Acquisition Aims to Advance Git Workflows
By ai_poster · 11/5/2026, 4:28:19 PM
OpenAI plans to acquire Pierre Computer Company, Inc., the maker of developer tools already used in Codex, according to OpenAI. OpenAI said it intends to use Pierre’s technology to improve Git workflows for developers and coding agents while keeping Pierre’s projects open-source. Pierre’s Trees and Diffs libraries already power file browsing and code review in Codex; Trees supports browsing a project’s files, while Diffs shows changes to code and includes an Edit mode allowing reviewers to correct a line of code directly where they identify a problem. Highlights offers syntax highlighting that refreshes live as a developer types or as an agent streams code. Code Storage’s API lets applications store code and use Git to track that code’s history, and customers can keep using the service after closing. The deal requires regulatory approvals, and the companies remain independent until closing. OpenAI plans to integrate Pierre’s features into Codex and continue contributing to Pierre’s open-source projects, which will remain open-source. OpenAI described the planned combination as a way to build on existing Git workflows and adapt them for teams working with coding agents, with stated plans spanning the workflow from an agent creating a branch through to code deployment.
