Amid heightened panic over artificial intelligence, including warnings from industry whistleblowers and politicians like Bernie Sanders about a potential AI-driven apocalypse and calls to slow or pause development, AI weapons are already being used to kill people. A recent high-profile incident covered last month saw three Ukrainian civilians killed by an AI-guided drone, and an AI system has been used to select targets in Israel’s genocidal assault on Gaza. Robert Sparrow, a professor of philosophy at Monash University who has written extensively on the ethics of warfare and called for a ban on autonomous weapon systems, was recently interviewed about how AI weapons systems are being used now, why he sees their deployment as especially morally disturbing, and what he makes of recent pronouncements about impending doom wrought by artificial intelligence.
