More than 80 percent of people don't independently verify AI-generated information, creating a new challenge for New Zealand businesses as platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity become the first place customers go for answers. While businesses focus on using AI for productivity and competitive advantage, less attention is paid to what AI says about them. Reputation is increasingly influenced by how AI interprets and presents information, and unlike a cybersecurity incident, there are no alarms when AI gets it wrong. Research by Atlas Digital found audits of SaaS, technology and financial services companies showed 72 percent contained at least one factual error across major AI platforms, while seven in 10 failed to appear in recommendations for their own category despite performing strongly in Google search. For New Zealand, where technology is one of the fastest-growing export sectors, if AI cannot accurately explain what a company does or recommend it, that business risks becoming invisible when buying decisions are made. Success will depend on whether AI understands a business well enough to represent and recommend it.
