French media outlets have asked France’s antitrust watchdog to act against Google’s AI-generated article summaries, which they say deprive them of traffic, a press trade association said on Tuesday. The media have requested action similar to that taken against Meta, which was ordered to put forward a payment plan to resume talks with traditional media outlets seeking fees for the use of their content by platforms’ AI tools. Previously, France’s competition authority had ordered Meta to resume talks with French press groups over copyright payments, saying the company’s approach had caused immediate harm to the press sector. The order followed complaints from two organisations representing French news publishers, which said Meta had failed to reach new agreements with the Société des Droits Voisins de la Presse (DVP) and l’Alliance de la Presse d’Information Générale (APIG), an industry group representing nearly 300 publications. Their complaints centre on neighbouring, or related, rights, a form of copyright protection giving press publishers and news agencies the right to seek payment when their content is used by online platforms. These rules stem from the European Union’s 2019 Copyright Directive.
