What Does Alibaba (BABA) Qwen Royalty Model Mean For Its AI Business?
By ai_poster · 8/11/2026, 6:37:21 PM
Alibaba Group Holding plans to introduce a revenue-sharing model for commercial users of its upcoming Qwen3.8-Max open-source AI model, making it the first Chinese AI lab to formally tie open-weight model usage to a royalty-based revenue framework. The company aims to monetize open-weight AI deployments through royalties paid by businesses that use Qwen3.8-Max in commercial products and services. Alibaba sits at the intersection of China's ecommerce, cloud and AI sectors, and the stock trades at $132.32, with a decline of 15.0% year to date and a gain of 12.5% over the past year. The company is committing RMB 380 billion over three years to advance AI and cloud infrastructure, positioning it to benefit from enterprise adoption of generative AI and increasing cloud workloads. On the bull side, treating Qwen weights as royalty-bearing assets fits the narrative that Alibaba's AI stack can become an earnings engine, giving it a clearer way to participate when partners like Apple or large enterprises layer Qwen into their own products. The bear case is that a royalty model could slow adoption versus royalty-free options from groups like Meta or open communities, especially for cost-sensitive developers, and adds another execution test on top of heavy AI and cloud commitments and ongoing legal and regulatory questions.
