xAI has announced the release of Grok 4.6, a new flagship model designed to compete with OpenAI’s GPT-5, available immediately through the company’s API, the Cursor code editor, and the Grok Build environment. Building on Grok 4.5, the model retains the core 1.5 trillion parameter architecture while undergoing a longer supplemental training pass using curated model-generated reasoning data, technical engineering datasets, and refined reinforcement learning. According to official documentation, Grok 4.6 matches OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index with a score of 61. On specialized tests, it scored 1753 points on the GDPVal-AA knowledge work benchmark and reached 69.9 percent on CursorBench v3.2 and 65.9 percent on the DeepSWE v1.1 software engineering test, up from 54 percent in Grok 4.5. The model focuses on sustaining focus across extended workflows, conducting background research, setting up project structures, implementing core user interactions, and refining code based on feedback. It features an expanded 500,000-token context window for uploading large codebases or technical documents. For visual design, Grok 4.6 establishes aesthetics and layout hierarchies in its initial response to enable real-time iteration on prototypes.
