China's AI Strategy Focuses on Adoption and Global Reach, Contrasting…

China is building a more durable AI ecosystem than the United States by favoring industrial adoption and global reach over stock valuations, according to the author. Goldman Sachs estimates the largest hyperscalers will spend nearly $800 billion on capital expenditures this year, and the AI Big 10 represent roughly 42% of the S&P 500's total market capitalization. The S&P 500's 10 largest stocks have reached a concentration not seen since 1965, with the index trading at roughly 22 times forward earnings. China's AI stock sector suffered a correction that erased roughly $480 billion, and the STAR50 index fell more than 40% from the July peak, still trading around 100 times trailing earnings after the decline compared with nearly 250 times previously. DeepSeek, Alibaba and Moonshot have released open-weight models, and through August 2025 China-origin open-weight models represented 17.1% of worldwide AI model downloads versus 15.86% for the United States; architectures from China accounted for 41% of downloads on Hugging Face by mid-2026, developers produced more than 300,000 derivative models within Alibaba's Qwen ecosystem, and open-source large language models from China accumulated more than 10 billion downloads worldwide. China produces roughly 30% of global manufacturing output, and state-backed investors have sold during domestic rallies to restrain speculation.
