Meta executives faced Indian government officials for a second consecutive day on Thursday over Instagram’s content recommendation algorithms, their visible bias in distributing posts and the company’s compliance with Indian laws. The questioning was linked to the CJP-led Gen Z protests, during which Instagram became a major channel for videos, testimonies and mobilisation. The agitation exposed sharp differences in how protest-related content was amplified, restricted or repeatedly recommended to users, with the algorithm deciding which videos travelled, which accounts gained momentum and which posts remained buried. Meta told officials it was working to address deepfakes, child sexual abuse material, or CSAM, and bot accounts. The CJP protests grew around anger over the NEET paper leak and wider failures in the education system, with young protesters relying on social media to circulate information, document police action and challenge official narratives. Users saw similar posts not receive similar treatment, with some content spreading rapidly while others struggled for visibility. The government’s examination reportedly covered both Instagram’s recommendation systems and Meta’s compliance with Indian laws. Content moderation deals with what must be removed, while recommendation algorithms decide what receives attention before any removal request is made. Meta’s assurances on deepfakes, CSAM and bots address harmful material, but officials must establish whether legitimate political and public-interest content is being treated consistently.
