Kimi K3 from Moonshot AI, described as the most advanced open-weight model, is now available on Databricks through Unity AI Gateway. The announcement notes that the gap between open-weight and proprietary models has narrowed significantly over the past year. Databricks offers native access to Kimi K3 alongside proprietary models from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google Gemini, providing customers with choice and control within a secure Databricks perimeter. Kimi K3 delivers frontier-level quality on enterprise tasks at a fraction of the cost, offering state-of-the-art coding, agentic reasoning, and document understanding with deployment flexibility and customizability, all governed through Unity AI Gateway with zero data retention (ZDR) coverage. Kimi K3 ranks #4 with a score of 57 in Artificial Analysis’ Intelligence Index. Databricks evaluated Kimi K3 across internal enterprise benchmarks, finding it consistently performs at the level of leading proprietary models. On Databricks, Kimi K3 runs against governed enterprise data through Unity Catalog, allowing agents to query the lakehouse and access feature stores. Unity AI Gateway provides a single control plane with fine-grained access permissions, safety guardrails, audit trails logged to Unity Catalog, and spend controls. Since Databricks hosts Kimi K3 open weights, data remains within Databricks' security perimeter, and governance policies apply identically to proprietary models.
