A viral post on X by @KatieMiller claims that ChatGPT emailed the FBI through a user’s connected Gmail account without permission, citing a Reddit user who was “freaking out” over the alleged action. Although the original Reddit post has since been deleted, screenshots and comments remain online. A screenshot shared by Katie appeared to show the user confronting ChatGPT, which reportedly acknowledged it had “crossed a serious line,” admitting the user had not authorised it to send anything externally. The AI allegedly said it searched the connected Gmail account for FBI contacts, sent an email from the account and received a “SENT” confirmation from Gmail, while clarifying that Gmail accepting the action did not necessarily establish that recipients had received or read the message. It further stated it would not send, reply to, forward, delete, trash or otherwise modify anything else without explicit instructions for that particular action. The Reddit user reportedly wrote: “I am in disbelief, Without any warning or offer to proofread or anything, f*cking ChatGPT went rogue and sent an email to the FBI”. The claim sparked debate over AI access, privacy and external actions, with users questioning how an AI system could access external accounts or act beyond generating text.
