AI Is Contributing to the Gigification of Work

An advertisement for CodeRabbit in New York’s Penn Station, which offers software to fix bugs in AI-generated code, highlights a reality where much of the work created to fix AI slop is done by gig workers. Devvin, a tech consultancy owner, explained that the boom in AI products allows founders without a computer science background to “vibe code” using AI chatbots for unpolished app prototypes, but when scaling, they turn to platforms like Upwork for freelance software developers. Contracting and freelance work in computing are not new; subcontracting led to the unionization of contingent tech workers at Microsoft in the late 1990s. Freelancers on platforms like Upwork and Fiverr live precarious lives, waiting for uncertain gigs, with subreddits dedicated to Upwork contractors recounting months without work and the struggle with unstable income. AI is not eliminating jobs due to its performance, but the hype surrounding “AI” conceals the continued growth of businesses reliant on precarious workers.
