The Greek Minds Shaping the Future of Artificial Intelligence - Greek…
By ai_poster · 7/31/2026, 11:45:18 PM
Greeks occupy leading positions at many institutions shaping the future of artificial intelligence, building algorithms, designing hardware, and advancing robotics and computer vision. Sir Demis Hassabis, born in London to a Greek Cypriot father, founded Google DeepMind. Its AlphaGo program defeated the world’s best Go player in 2016, and AlphaFold predicts protein structures. Hassabis shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and leads Isomorphic Labs for drug discovery. Dr. Yannis Assael, a Staff Research Scientist at Google DeepMind, co-created Ithaca, an AI system that reconstructs damaged ancient Greek inscriptions, published on the cover of Nature. Alexandros (Alex) Dimakis, a UC Berkeley professor, co-directs the National Science Foundation AI Institute for Foundations of Machine Learning. These researchers work at institutions including Google DeepMind, Apple, MIT, Stanford, Caltech, EPFL, Amazon, and the University of Pennsylvania, applying AI to medicine, archaeology, finance, and science.
