Socar and its autonomous driving subsidiary, Apex Mobility have unveiled a three-phase roadmap to transform Jeju Special Self-Governing Province into a hub for autonomous driving technology. Socar announced on the 27th that Jeju Governor Wi Seong-gon and Democratic Party lawmaker Lee So-young visited the 'Socar Terminal' near Jeju International Airport on the 24th, where Socar and Apex Mobility CEO Park Jae-wook presented the vision. The Socar Terminal, which opened in December last year, is a large-scale offline hub spanning 7,898 square meters. The three-phase roadmap includes Phase 1: conversion of internal combustion engine vehicles to EVs; Phase 2: expansion of autonomous car-sharing services; and Phase 3: expansion of autonomous ride-hailing (robotaxis) and robo-buses. CEO Park highlighted Jeju's potential as a real-world testing environment where demands of residents and tourists overlap, referencing global precedents in the U.S. and China. Lawmaker Lee So-young focused on the social value of expanding autonomous driving.
