On July 22, 2026, AI company OpenAI announced a new project in Effingham County, Georgia, about 45 minutes outside of Savannah, which will be served by Georgia Power. The project is expected to create thousands of new jobs and billions of dollars in new investment. OpenAI will pay the full infrastructure and electric service costs and fulfill requirements for long-term energy contracts with financial assurances to protect customers, aligned with rules approved by the Georgia Public Service Commission in January 2025. OpenAI is expected to need approximately 3,200 megawatts (MW) of power for its facility and has agreed to provide up to 1,000 MW of flexible demand response, reducing power use during high demand to support grid reliability. Under the 25-year agreement, Georgia Power can reduce energy delivered to the facility at certain times. Aaron Mitchell, senior vice president of Strategic Growth for Georgia Power, stated the company is working to ensure growth from data centers brings value through higher reliability and lower prices.
