Fields Medalist Jacob Tsimerman has begun shifting his focus to AI safety and will soon be joining OpenAI’s Safety team, a move welcomed by OpenAI Chief Research Officer Mark Chen. This follows a trend of top scientists moving to leading AI companies; in the first half of this year, Nobel laureate in chemistry John Jumper, economist Chad Jones, and philosopher Harvey Lederman all joined Anthropic. Meanwhile, ByteDance’s Seed Edge team launched the Seed STEM Scientist Program this past Thursday, offering 100 collaboration slots to scientists and PhD students in fields such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology. According to publicly available information, this is China’s first large-scale initiative dedicated to using AI to accelerate discoveries in frontier science.
