However, access depends on which chip is inside the infotainment unit, excluding a substantial portion of the fleet. The update is rolling out now and expected to reach the full fleet by the end of July. Separately, Tesla silenced turn signal and hazard light chimes inside driverless Model Y cabs, a tweak noted by EV analyst Sawyer Merritt on July 27. Tesla first integrated Grok in July 2025 as a screen-bound chatbot; the Spring Update in April 2026 added the "Hey Grok" wake word. Version 2026.26 closes that gap, allowing drivers on compatible hardware to make phone calls, search and play music, adjust cabin climate, open the glovebox, and search the controls panel through natural voice interaction. The feature's compatibility depends on the Media Control Unit (MCU) chip, as Tesla's vehicles carry two separate computers: the autopilot/FSD unit and the MCU.
