Money Forward Home announced on August 4 that it has begun offering an "AI Category Suggestion" feature in the iOS version of its household budgeting app "Money Forward ME." The feature uses AI to infer and suggest appropriate categories for expense entries that remain "uncategorized," powered by Apple's generative AI platform, Apple Intelligence. The company said users have voiced frustration over "the tedious task of manually categorizing entries that pile up without being automatically sorted," and that unresolved uncategorized entries can degrade the accuracy of household budget tracking. During extended holiday periods such as summer vacation, payments at unfamiliar locations tend to increase, making it easier for uncategorized entries to accumulate. The feature displays up to three AI-inferred category suggestions when a user opens the editing screen for an uncategorized entry, allowing assignment with a single tap, while users can still manually select a category if desired. The feature is provided in compliance with Apple's privacy design principles. To use it, users must have iOS/iPadOS 26 or later and a device that supports Apple Intelligence, including iPhone 15 Pro/15 Pro Max and later models, as well as iPads equipped with M1 chips or newer, with Apple Intelligence enabled in Settings. Money Forward ME has already leveraged Apple Intelligence for automatic categorization in receipt scanning and store-name search accuracy. The company plans to continue expanding AI-powered features amid intensifying competition in the household budgeting app market.
