Jake Tapper Asks Texas Gov-Elect About Elon Musk and AI’s Future in H…

Texas Democratic Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa told CNN's Jake Tapper she is willing to work with Elon Musk and his companies but warned they would no longer be allowed to take advantage of Texans. Her comments followed her victory over Republican Gov. Greg Abbott on Tuesday, part of a Democratic wave that also saw James Talarico defeat Ken Paxton in the state's Senate race; Musk spent $458 million supporting Republicans, including substantial spending to help Paxton defeat Talarico. Tapper noted much of Musk's investment in Texas involved artificial intelligence ambitions, an industry reeling after Democrats' sweeping election victories, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunging 3.44%, the S&P 500 falling 4.36% and the Nasdaq dropping 5.52%, all three indexes recording their worst days since April 2025 and erasing Wednesday's post-election gains. Tapper cited CNN voter polling showing 75% of Texans opposed data centers in their communities versus 25% who supported them. Hinojosa said Texas has always been pro-business but "what changes now with me as governor is it has to be a partnership that benefits Texans," calling for a stop to data centers until protections exist and saying economic growth and protections were "not mutually exclusive." Asked about opposition to selling Boca Chica State Park land to SpaceX, she said selling the beach to Musk is "almost unimaginable" and "unacceptable," adding a strong working relationship must be "on our terms."
