Vodafone is testing a mobile mast in Albania that physically moves its own antenna using a proprietary AI algorithm paired with a robotic arm manufactured by South Korean firm HUMAX Networks. Launched from the company's official newsroom on July 21, 2026, the trial autonomously rotates and tilts the antenna to redirect 4G and 5G signal, taking around 20 to 30 minutes, compared to a manual adjustment process that can stretch to weeks or even months. Vodafone's Director of Mobile Access Engineering, Francisco 'Paco' Martin Pignatelli, described it as "an early example of Physical AI in telecoms." The system, called RoboRAN, addresses a gap left by existing electronic solutions like Remote Electrical Tilt (RET), which cannot rotate antennas horizontally, and Massive MIMO, which requires replacing antenna hardware at every site. RoboRAN attaches a robotic arm to existing antennas, offering incremental capital cost rather than wholesale replacement.
