More people are increasingly using ChatGPT for emotional support, advice, and anxiety relief, a trend backed by data: a Harvard Business Review report found the most frequent use of generative AI is emotional support or companionship, ahead of managing personal life, purpose-seeking, or healthy habits. A 2025 Línea Directa study found nine out of ten young Spaniards aged 16 to 19 use technology for health information, and 24.8% of Spaniards have turned to digital self-diagnosis as a first option. In Mexico, the sixth AXA Mind Health Report says 71% of the population use AI tools for mental health support. This coincides with deteriorating mental health, as the World Health Organization estimates more than 1 billion people worldwide live with a psychological disorder. However, The Guardian reported some AI systems in search engines have offered incorrect or decontextualised health information. The European Union has included AI in health among areas with the strictest requirements in its Artificial Intelligence Act. Mexican psychologist María Fernanda Cruz Urquiza says people turn to ChatGPT before important decisions, especially relationship conflicts, because it offers permanent availability and constant validation, which patients find appealing, plus a judgment-free, immediate response attractive to those with anxiety. Psychotherapist Cecilia Paredes Aldama agrees but notes her patients are not replacing therapy; they use the tool to draft messages, communicate assertively, or prepare for difficult conversations.
