Microsoft says schools want AI training, guardrails and tools

Microsoft released its 2026 AI in Education Report and announced new AI tools and training for schools. The research shows 92% of students and education leaders and 88% of educators using AI for school-related purposes. New offerings in Microsoft 365 Education include AI-assisted Unit Plans in Teach, Student AI Guidelines and Learning Groups in Assignments, Learning Zone classroom experiences, and Copilot Notebooks and a Study and Learn Agent. Microsoft is expanding its Elevate for Educators training and launching a no-cost AI Literacy for Educators credential pathway. The report found 58% of education leaders saying their schools are implementing or scaling AI, 87% of educators and education leaders who see AI skills as important for students' futures, 79% of students who see AI skills as important for their futures, 77% of students reporting they have not received formal AI training, and 53% of educators reporting they have not received formal AI training. The survey interviewed 3,345 people across six countries.
