Anthropic has reached a 20-year, $9.1 billion computing power procurement agreement with Bitcoin mining firm Riot Platforms, which will supply up to 191 megawatts of computing power to its Rockdale, Texas campus—enough to power roughly 143,000 households. Riot disclosed the deal earlier Monday, and sources later confirmed Anthropic as the client. Riot’s stock surged 25% in after-hours trading, reaching $24.40 per share. The contract remains in effect through June 2048 and includes two five-year extension options, potentially boosting total sales to as much as $16.1 billion. Anthropic has recently signed additional computing agreements to meet customer demand, including a $10 billion deal with Volta Infra Holdings Ltd. and a nearly $45 billion purchase of computing resources from Elon Musk’s xAI in May. Riot, formerly named Bioptix and previously in biotech diagnostic equipment, pivoted to Bitcoin mining and now sells computing resources from its AI data center. It also announced another agreement with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) to build computing infrastructure. Riot’s second-quarter sales exceeded expectations, posting total revenue of $174.2 million—up 14% year over year and 17.16% above the consensus estimate.
