This marks a strategic reversal in how AI superpowers approach public discourse. Two years ago, OpenAI researchers regularly shared technical details, but as competition intensified and security concerns mounted, US labs began clamping down, with internal policies discouraging employees from discussing work publicly. Chinese labs, including DeepSeek, Zhipu AI, and Baichuan Intelligence, saw an opening and now post paper breakdowns, recruiting messages in both Mandarin and English, and commentary on model releases and benchmark results. By maintaining an active presence on X, which remains the primary gathering place for global AI researchers despite being blocked in mainland China through VPN usage, Chinese labs are competing directly for international talent, with job postings appearing in threads and researchers documenting moves from US institutions to Chinese companies after initial contact on the platform. One AI researcher said, "We're seeing a complete flip in communication strategy. The Chinese labs realized that being open and accessible on social media, even selectively, gives them credibility and reach that closed-door operations can't match." OpenAI has transitioned toward a more commercial, security-focused posture following its partnership with Microsoft, while Anthropic has followed a similar path as it raised billions in funding.
