Professors Gerry Tsoukalas and Brett Falk published a paper titled *The AI Layoff Trap*, warning that mass layoffs from AI could trigger an economic trap that "no CEO can stop." In an interview on *New Normal with Katty Kay*, Tsoukalas explained that if companies replace workers with AI to cut costs, those workers—who are also customers—would lose the money to buy products, potentially collapsing the economy. He described a scenario where a monopoly adopts AI and lays off "90% of my staff," but those people are also the ones buying the company's widgets. Tsoukalas stated that "waiting for the firms to figure out for themselves I think is the worst possible thing we can do," and warned that the temptation to "over automate" could cost the economy in the long run, as without human workers, there might not be any customers to keep companies afloat.
