Primus, an autonomous AI research pipeline developed by four-person startup Transformer Lab from Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, opened waitlist access Monday. The company claims Primus produced more than 30 papers in 30 consecutive days, with at least one cited by a team at Google DeepMind. A researcher submits a question as a single prompt, and the system deploys dozens or hundreds of AI agents for tasks including literature review, hypothesis refinement, experimental design, code execution, results analysis, and final write-up. The end product is a completed research paper produced "hours to days" after the initial prompt. CEO Ali Asaria, who previously built BrickBreaker for BlackBerry, founded Well.ca, and created Tulip, frames Primus's value as access to AI researchers. ManpowerGroup's 2026 Talent Shortage Survey found AI skills rank as the hardest to find globally, with a demand-to-supply ratio of approximately 3.2 to 1. The launch coincides with a Princeton-led independent evaluation finding that frontier systems can complete all engineering work a research paper requires but cannot exercise open-ended scientific judgment. Transformer Lab has published all internally produced research at its lab.cloud research catalogue, with papers spanning a wide set of domains.
