US clampdown on Anthropic models sends EU sovereignty surge into over…
By ai_poster · 6/15/2026, 5:41:38 PM
Anthropic announced on Friday that the US government issued an export control directive requiring the AI upstart to prevent any non-US citizens from accessing its cybersecurity models Mythos 5 and Fable 5, effectively forcing the company to stop making the models available to everyone. Anthropic said its understanding is that the government believes it has become aware of a method of bypassing, or 'jailbreaking,' Fable 5, though the government has only given verbal evidence of a potential narrow, non-universal jailbreak. The Wall Street Journal reports the directive resulted from conversations between Amazon CEO Andy Jassy and US officials, including Treasury secretary Scott Bessent. Anthropic executives are set to meet with US officials at the White House this week. Thomas Regnier, spokesperson for the European Commission, said the body is assessing the directive's implications, calling the development "a further illustration of why Europe needs to strengthen its technological sovereignty" and underlining the relevance of EU legislation including the AI Act, the Cyber Resilience Act, and the NIS2 Directive.
