A crypto user known as @cprkrn recovered 5 BTC, worth approximately $400K, after more than a decade of being locked out, using Anthropic’s Claude AI. The recovery happened around May 13-14, 2026, and the story spread across X, Tom’s Hardware, and the Bitcoin Foundation. Claude did not break Bitcoin’s cryptography; it analyzed files on @cprkrn’s old computer and located an encrypted wallet backup dating back to December 2019. The AI identified a critical bug in btcrecover, the open-source recovery tool that had already churned through 3.5 trillion password combinations without success. The bug was in how it was combining shared keys and passwords; once fixed, the correct password combination worked, opening the wallet after 11 years of trying. Claims that Claude Code identified the vulnerability in eight minutes are not confirmed by primary reports, which focused on its code review and bug identification capabilities. Claude did not crack seed phrases or brute-force Bitcoin’s encryption; it performed file analysis and workflow debugging on locally stored data. The estimated 3 to 4 million BTC believed to be permanently lost represents a potentially recoverable pool if AI tools can identify bugs in recovery software. Bitcoin’s core cryptographic security wasn’t compromised, and the recovery relied on access to local files, not a systemic vulnerability.
