Peking University alumni are increasingly leading China's AI sector in enterprise intelligence, AI for Science, and embodied intelligence, targeting core industry problems. This legacy traces back to the late 1960s, when Peking University teachers and students undertook a national task to develop a large-scale digital computer capable of performing one million operations per second, codenamed the 150 Machine. At the time, China's oil exploration faced challenges processing seismic data manually, and foreign computer technologies were strictly restricted, forcing independent R&D. The software team, led by teacher Yang Fuqing, verified software in advance at Daqing Oilfield using the existing 108B computer. Team members worked in shifts around the clock, sleeping only two to three hours a day each, finishing debugging work in just 23 days. In 1973, the 150 Machine was successfully developed. In April of the following year, it processed China's first offshore digital seismic profile, praised as the "profile that honors the Chinese people," pushing geological exploration into the digital era. Later, in 1974, China launched the "748 Project" to solve Chinese character information processing challenges. In 1975, teaching assistant Wang Xuan joined the project, taking charge of research on Chinese character laser phototypesetting.
