Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney criticized Valve's mandatory Steam disclosures for games with AI-generated content, arguing they attach a "Scarlet Letter" to such games and can invite a "hater community trying to kill the game." Shortly before Sweeney's remarks, a self-described Linux gamer and coder named seeeeew shared an "AI warning for Steam" plugin on Bluesky. The plugin, available for Firefox and Google Chrome and listed on Github, makes AI content disclosures appear as an unmissable pop-up on Steam store pages and blurs AI-aided games in search results with a label reading "AI Generated Content Disclosure found." Many discovered the plugin during the latest Steam Next Fest, as more entries use AI-generated images or assets. Sweeney, whose Epic Games Store does not use such disclosures, stated that devs "have to choose from either not using tools that can make you way more productive, and probably failing due to competition that does." A GamesRadar+ report featuring over 30 game developers repeatedly heard that many do not want to use generative AI.
