OpenAI and Anthropic Hunt 20–30 MW Sites Despite Gigawatt-Scale Deals

OpenAI and Anthropic are reportedly seeking deals for roughly 20 to 30 MW of data-center capacity in the United Kingdom and Nordic countries, with U.S. deployments also under discussion, CNBC reported Friday, citing people familiar with the talks. No supplier, contract value or delivery date was identified, and neither company has announced a specific transaction matching the report. The search adds a short-cycle layer to a buildout usually measured in gigawatts: OpenAI said in April that it had passed its original 10 GW U.S. infrastructure goal and added more than 3 GW in 90 days. A single 20–30 MW block equals just 0.2% to 0.3% of OpenAI’s 10 GW benchmark and 0.4% to 0.6% of the capacity in Anthropic’s expanded Amazon agreement. Under Anthropic’s April agreement with Amazon, it committed more than $100 billion over 10 years to AWS technology and expects nearly 1 GW of Trainium capacity online by the end of 2026; Amazon invested $5 billion at signing and may invest another $20 billion. Anthropic said its run-rate revenue had exceeded $30 billion, up from about $9 billion at the end of 2025. OpenAI’s expanded Amazon partnership added $100 billion over eight years and about 2 GW of Trainium capacity.
