Prime Minister Anthony Albanese met with former Apple head Tim Cook and other executives at Apple headquarters in California on Sunday morning, Australian time, in a one-hour, closed-door meeting that followed a June phone call after Apple rolled out child safety features, some inspired by Australia's social media account ban for under-16s. Albanese warned that risks posed by growing AI use need to be mitigated and said a discussion is needed about a global framework for AI, adding "We need to make sure that humans remain in control." International rules on AI were raised as he joined a push among middle powers at the United Nations for more regulations, while national AI standards unveiled in July require data centres to be powered by additional, renewable energy. He said a balance is needed between AI's benefits and harms, and that writers and other creative artists would still own their work ahead of looming copyright changes, leaving the door open for creators to opt out of their work being used to train AI.
