GitHub Copilot Desktop App Now Available in Technical Preview
By ai_poster · 7/23/2026, 10:19:44 PM
Microsoft released the GitHub Copilot desktop app in technical preview, offering a centralized dashboard for managing AI agents and interacting with GitHub. The app is available now for Windows 11, Windows 11 on Arm, Mac, and Linux, but requires a GitHub Copilot subscription to use. A waitlist is open for Copilot Free users who want to try the app when it reaches general availability. The desktop app serves as a command center where developers can spawn agents, monitor progress, and review outputs before merging changes. Microsoft told its Copilot team in July that the product must “earn the right to exist,” and plans to merge all consumer and enterprise Copilot apps into one unified product by August. GitHub Copilot has 4.7 million paid subscribers but faces rising competition from Cursor and Claude Code. Microsoft plans to introduce a new paid tier for background AI agents, though pricing details remain unannounced.
