Anthropic has corralled a handful of nonprofits in what The Post describes as a phony ecosystem of woke elitists supposedly policing AI threats. Redwood Research, a Berkeley, Calif.-based group that co-authored a report detailing how rogue OpenAI agents hacked Hugging Face, is among them. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei endorsed another watchdog, Model Evaluation and Threat Research (METR), backed by Effective Altruism leaders. Redwood shares Anthropic connections: original board member Holden Karnofsky is an Anthropic employee married to CEO Dario Amodei’s sister, Daniela Amodei. Redwood received a $36 million grant last November from Coefficient Giving, the Effective Altruism fund formerly known as Open Philanthropy, co-founded by Karnofsky; after the Hugging Face report went viral, Coefficient’s grantmakers recommended another $70 million for Redwood to “scale up their work.” Perry Metzger, chairman of Alliance for the Future, said the “organizational incest” linking Anthropic, METR, Redwood and EA-linked funds like Coefficient Giving makes independent arbitration impossible. Coefficient, co-founded by Karnofsky with Dustin Moskovitz, gave $1.5 million to METR’s incubator, the Alignment Research Center, in 2022; METR was originally ARC Evals before spinning off and renaming in 2023.
