Caroline Chung, Vice President and Chief Data and Analytics Officer at MD Anderson Cancer Center, shared a LinkedIn post about being featured in CIO Magazine, discussing her journey from radiation oncologist to a data role and the value of building culture-first AI for cancer care. Chung stated, “an AI strategy is only ever as strong as the culture that stewards it,” noting that capable algorithms failed not because the math was wrong, but because teams did not trust the output, could not integrate it into their workflow, or could not define what needed to be measured to show its value and risk. She emphasized that precision medicine relies on precision measurement, which depends on how questions are asked, data is prepared, and whether the patient stays at the center of design choices. Chung described AI as often treated as a destination, but the real work involves asking the right question before reaching for a model and having the discipline to tell a promising algorithm its context of use is not ready. She concluded that AI can help move from reactive medicine to anticipatory care, but only if built carefully, together, and with discipline, stating, “Culture, not code.”
